You have to have a birth certificate or passport to come back into the country. However, as of 12/31/06 a passport will be required for all reentry from anywhere (Canada & Mexico included). If you're planning on doing any more traveling outside the country, you may want to consider going ahead and getting one.

Depends on the countries that you're traveling to. you don't need one for the US Virgin Islands, but will require a passport for others.
